What is NPS (National Pension System)?
The National Pension System was launched by the Government of India in 2004, initially it was introduced only for government employees but in 2009 after five years it was opened to all citizens. And at the same time this plan has also been opened for NRIs. It is managed by PFRDA (Pension Fund Regulatory & Development). Private sector employees and self-employed professionals of our country will also be given the opportunity to provide benefits of the pension scheme. Under this scheme, the candidate is required to contribute regularly to his pension account during his work life. Candidates can avail pension after a certain age limit. There are two types of accounts under this, about which we are going to tell you further.
Every person wishes that he does not have to face any kind of difficulties in old age. Many government employees are provided pension facility by the government, which enables them to improve their lifestyle. Similarly, people who are in the private sector or self-employed also want that they do not have any kind of trouble in old age, for this, they invest in different places, so that they continue to get interest. For those who want to improve their lifestyle even in old age, NPS is a better option for them. This can give you good returns and under Tier-1, you also get rid of income tax.

As you all will know that in the present time, every kind of work has been done online. An online portal of National Pension System has been launched which provides the facility to provide various types of facilities online to the beneficiaries. Interested candidates who want to open their account in NPS can easily register through online process. After registration you will be allotted a PRAN. After that you will be able to log in to your e-NPS account through various channels. If you are going to log in for the first time, then we are going to tell you about the step-by-step process for login.
Types of Account
Under NPS, two types of accounts can be opened, tier 1 and tier 2. Before opening an account, it is very important to know about both these types of accounts. Let us give you detailed information about both types of accounts.
NPS Tier 1
NPS membership starts with opening a Tier 1 account, in which a PRAN (Permanent Retirement Account Number) is provided to the candidate after opening the account. Candidates who want to open an account in Tier 2 must have a Tier 1 account. This account is mainly designed for old age, so under this, candidates cannot withdraw the amount invested for 60 years. In many cases, you can make partial withdrawals for specific purposes or you can go out early. Under this scheme, the beneficiary gets income tax exemption. Under NPS Tier I, you can save and invest to claim the tax deduction available under the variant sections of Income Tax.
NPS Tier 2
Interested candidates who want to open a Tier II account, they should already have a Tier I account. Various types of discounts have also been given under Tier II. As such, under this you have a voluntary account with account flexible and exit rules. Unlike Tier I account, there is no lock-in with savings in Tier II account. Interested candidate is able to withdraw at any time. However, this account also works just like Tier I, but there are some differences. Contribution to Tier II NPS has no tax benefit – you cannot claim a deduction and on exit, the corpus is taxed. However, in functionality, both Tier I and Tier II are the same and hence fund management costs as well as investment choices.
